Salvagery Art show at New spa
The show had some very nice pieces on display, Snail trail" and "Shitaki" by Ryan Ostler are some cool pieces along with "DK" by Kelly Ogilvie. The show is in a well to do part of town, hopefully they will have sugcess selling their work. There weren't a lot of people at the opening , the spa is kind of hidden away, on the way to try and find the spa my G.P.S took me in the wrong direction.
The work "Snail trail" is in a waxing and massage room, I can't help but to think of the ladies (or men) in the room getting hot wax or massage oil spread over their bodies and gazing at this piece feeling nails slowly sliding across the parts they are getting waxed. The varnish on the piece makes it look like its still wet, there is enough of it on the piece to survive a fire, which it did. The pollock like paint drizzles bring your eye to the snail on the right side of the work. The artist names his works after what he sees in the abstracts, or he collaborates with other artists to complete the vision of the non-abstracted subject. Its fun to try to match the name to the painting, most of them are obvious.
"DK" is a mixed media work with pieces of twine and gel transfers, this is one of kelly Ogilvie's best pieces. It's an abstracted study of loss. The muted greens and reddish brown fabric hints at the a vivid past that is no longer, the dragon fly wing is being slowly absorbed into the canvas as if it was a piece of earth. This work moves the viewer to a very somber place emotionally; a reflective place. There should have been more of her pieces in the show.
The majority of the work is from Ryan Ostler, with a couple of pieces each from other artists such as Kelly Ogilvie. It would have been nice to see a equal number of works from all the artists. If you want a wax or massage this month I suggest you check out New Spa in Mayberry Landing, and if you get the snail room tell me what you think.

Nada Dada
I went to see the Nada Dada event on Sunday (Father's Day), with my Paps and my son. It was a really groovy show, too bad I didn't get to see more of it. Next year I'm going to make a point of seeing it when its in full swing, or even better, to be a part and it and get a room at one of the Nada Dada motels.
The Nada Dada event is where a large group of artists rent rooms in various "older" motor lodges and motels around downtown Reno then the artists modify the rooms by taking out the beds and what ever else they feel like to set up their own little gallery of personal work. For four days the artists can sell works and interact with the community of artists and art lovers. This is a great event for Reno, I wish we had more events of this kind.
We made it to the El Ray motel, on Arlington and to the Wildflower Village, on West 4th Street. Most of the rooms were closing up shop by the time we got around to them, but from what was left there were some was really good artists.
The rooms that I enjoyed the most at the El Ray were Alice in NadaLand room. The hats and masks in this room were awesome, I wanted to try them on; the copper gas mask was the best. This room was a sensory overload, things were everywhere in the tiny space. the artist who created the room told us that he didn't want any negative space left in the room. He succeeded in that attempt. This room had a reputation to hold up from the previous rooms that we visited and it did not disappoint. Mark Hammond, Christopher Robin Blum and Sally Hanrahan had nice photos of Burning Man, Pyramid Lake, motel signs from around downtown Reno and much more. Erik Holland's room had some very nice paintings.
The wildflower village also had some good rooms, the ones I liked at this location where the Japanese room and the room with the pans that had the bullet shells adhered to them. Its really cool to see found object art that is that well done, I would have never thought of making something like that. The Japanese room had some amazing painting of the nuclear explosions that happened after the earthquake and tsunami. The piece I found the most striking was the Japanese flag painted on concrete that was broken into many pieces. The other work I liked was "Ka" the set of paintings that you couldn't avoid staring at.
This is an event that you should see and support. I know I will be going next year. You can't beat it! It free, its friendly, its a good time for the whole family!! We need to more events like this in Reno. Thank you, Nada Dada!!

The RN&R Newspaper boxes are done!!!!
the back of the box |
I know I put a lot of thought into the concept of my box not only in the way its composed but as well to the images. Some of the other boxes were not as well thought out and under the time constraints some artists only had two weeks to finish their box, other artists had two boxes, I can see how you would have to rush the process and leave the concept behind. They're nice to look at, that's it! There is no deeper meaning. There was some copyrighted images on the boxes, which is a lack of creativity, and illegal on top of that.
There were some problems with the way the boxes were displayed. The working part of the boxes, with the door, were facing the entrances in the different parts of the gallery while the majority of the artwork was around the side and back of the boxes. You couldn't see most of the work as you walked by the rooms. The boxes weren't made to be shown in a gallery, I painted mine to look it's best out on the street, that's how the other artists painted their boxes. I can't wait to see them all out on the streets where they will be in all their glory.

Twisted minds Art Show
Twisted Minds has a art show going on now with some of Reno's best artist. The featured Artist is Bart McCoy along with Wes Lee and some others very good artist that unfortunately I didn't catch their names, because there were no name tags to be found.
The studies by Bart McCoy are awesome in there detail, it was like looking at a photograph. Most of the Pieces that are in the show are smaller, a couple of my favorite are a Beetle hanging from a string, a glass eye with a orangey red background, and a portrait of a birds skull, It looked like you could pluck them right out of the frames, they are that well rendered.
Wes Lee, had assorted pieces, two portrait of people dressed up at Burning man, a portrait of a woman with her hair being blown with a ornate border with a fly and beetle and an American flag done in a limited pallet of values of browns.
There is one large piece done by an anonymous artist witch was of a girl in a red rain coat looking back at the viewer as she walks into a huge menacing storm cloud.
the bronze sculptures are something you should check out especial if you have kids. the sculpted pieces are of little big headed children almost doll like, doing various thing there are a group of these children with little devil horns over running a larger figure that is sitting with a blank expression on it face. the other one of this that i liked was one of the child like doll figure has fallen asleep on a pillow mattress.
There is a piece that I really like of father time there that I find just amazing it the level of detail that's in the work.
If you get the time I highly recommend this show. Its at one of the cooler gallery/ tattoo parlors in town, Twisted Minds. Its the kind of work I really enjoy seeing, its not a lot of pieces, but the pieces they have are quality works of art.

"Green Art Affair" Art Show at the TRS, presented by Unit E
I enjoyed the "Green Art Affair" art show. It had a good turnout for a up and coming art group. It was very interesting and inspirational to see what people can come up with only from left over and discarded objects. The volunteers were very friendly and fun, the cool thing is that the volunteers were also some of the artist that made the pieces in the show.
The green pottery was neat to see, and very well done. The green mixed media works were some of my favorites, the Tree painted on wood panels that was in the proses of being cut into three logs by Alex Schneide. The three dimensional hatchet handle I thought was a great touch, it really caught your eye as you walk through the gallery, the only bad thing is that the perspective worked from limited angles, there wasn't enough room to step back and view it properly. the piece would have been best suited on the wall directly across from the entrance. I did not catch the title.
"Log" by Scott Baker, I found to be intriguing, a log that a artist finds in his backyard can go from being ignored and left to decay, to a fine art gallery where people honor it and view the log with respect.
(on a side note: I would have like to have seen a little deeper relief cut in areas to show more definition.)
" Log" says a lot about the human spirit. It tells us that with a lot of hard work and some time we can all be like the "log" and find new uses for ourselves and our resources. This is the whole point of having art in the first place, to see something in a new light.
The one drawback of the whole show was that there were a limited number of green art pieces to view,I want to see more! the space was a bit "cozy"(small) for all the people and the art. I don't know if have too many people and art is a good thing, or a bad thing at one of your first art shows. I can't wait for the next show. I hope to be in it.

My friend, Ty's Art Party
A group of Ty's friends, artist and non artist alike got together to paint his studio. Where we could paint wherever and whatever struck our fancy, I tried to paint suggestive and lewd images, but I think they came out too good, they kind of lose their impact when they're done so well. I also painted a pretty good likeness of Ty, for only having spent a half an hour or so on it.
Had lots of fun painting random thing that came to mind. Its not every day that me and my family and friends get the chance to paint in acrylics all over someone's walls. Now Ty has original D.Slingland's on his wall, I hope he enjoys them.

Strega Art Show Reception
The Reception had a good turn out, lots of people checking out what my classmate and I have been working hard on all this semester. you can't beat having a show for your final. BEST FINAL EVER!!! It feels awesome to get good feedback after all the hard work.
The band was good as well, not too light and new aged as I thought, it gave off good vibes that went nice with the art.
To those who were wondering where I went, (if anybody cared) I took off without saying good bye to everybody. For that I feel bad.
What time and date do we come and pick up our pieces???

The Salvagery's Art Show, "Grandmothers Attic"
I thought the show was good. Its was dark and moody, almost cozy like a grandmothers attic should be. some of the better work got lost do to the lack of light, I personally would have liked to have had a flashlight to do some exploring of my own, to find the pieces that I might have missed. the use of old film footage projected on steamer trunks and other random stuff was nicely done. it drew me in as well as my son, lights were playing around the room like old memories in my mind, the lights coming from the works reveled new sides to the pieces you once have not seen.
I got bored of everything being all white. It would have been nice to see the use of a little more faded colors and old woods. The point of going through your Grandmother attic is to find some color that was once hidden away like a past life and lovers, there were hints of this but to get the full affect it need more.
Over all the show was good, I would recommend anyone who likes art to support the local artist and go see the The Salvagery's Art Show, "Grandmothers Attic"

Art Show Reception (TMCC)
The Art Show reception went well. No award for my painting, That's the way it goes sometimes. I did get a cool print for helping set up the Show. It was fun hanging one wall of the show with zombie hands and native American women, I think of that wall as my own mixed media piece.
